IBM and AMD Partner to Advance Quantum-Centric Supercomputing for the Future of AI and HPC

Inbizzy , Yorktown Heights, NY & Austin, TX – IBM (NYSE: IBM) and AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) have announced a strategic partnership to develop next-generation computing architectures that integrate quantum computing with high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) accelerators. This groundbreaking collaboration seeks to establish a new paradigm in computational power—quantum-centric supercomputing.

Quantum computing operates on qubits rather than classical bits, leveraging quantum mechanics to explore exponentially larger computational spaces. This capability promises breakthroughs across industries such as drug discovery, materials science, optimization, and logistics—domains where classical computing alone faces limitations.

IBM’s Quantum System Two, the company’s first modular quantum computer, serves as the foundation for this hybrid architecture. “Quantum computing will simulate the natural world and represent information in an entirely new way,” said Arvind Krishna, Chairman and CEO of IBM. “By combining IBM’s quantum technology with AMD’s advanced HPC solutions, we can push beyond the boundaries of traditional computing.”

AMD shares this vision of convergence. “High-performance computing is essential for solving the world’s toughest challenges,” said Dr. Lisa Su, Chair and CEO of AMD. “Our partnership with IBM represents a tremendous opportunity to accelerate innovation by merging HPC and quantum technologies.”

The collaboration will focus on integrating AMD’s CPUs, GPUs, and FPGAs with IBM’s quantum systems to enable hybrid workflows, potentially paving the way toward fault-tolerant quantum computing. Demonstrations showcasing hybrid quantum-classical computing are expected later this year, supported by open-source ecosystems like Qiskit to drive algorithm development and adoption.

IBM has already taken initial steps toward hybrid computing, partnering with RIKEN to link IBM Quantum System Two with Fugaku, one of the world’s fastest classical supercomputers, and collaborating with institutions like Cleveland Clinic and Lockheed Martin.

AMD’s HPC technologies currently power Frontier and El Capitan, the top two fastest supercomputers globally according to the TOP500 list, as well as numerous AI systems for enterprises and cloud providers worldwide.

With IBM’s quantum expertise and AMD’s leadership in HPC and AI, this partnership aims to create powerful hybrid computing systems capable of solving real-world problems at unprecedented speed and scale.
