The move marks a new chapter for the world’s largest software development platform, which has operated with relative independence since its acquisition by Microsoft in 2018.
Thomas Dohmke, who has led GitHub for nearly four years, revealed that he will step down to return to his roots as a startup founder and pursue new opportunities outside of Microsoft and GitHub. However, he will remain in his role until the end of 2025 to ensure a smooth transition.
No New CEO Appointment
Microsoft has decided not to appoint a new CEO for GitHub. Instead, the company’s entire leadership team will now report directly to Microsoft’s CoreAI division. This move is seen as a strategic step to strengthen collaboration between GitHub and Microsoft’s AI initiatives, especially amid the rapid growth of AI in the software development industry.
“GitHub and its leadership team will continue its mission as part of Microsoft’s CoreAI organization, with more details to be shared soon,” Dohmke wrote in an internal memo to employees. He added, “I leave with a deep sense of pride in everything we’ve built as a remote-first organization spread around the world.”
GitHub’s Journey Under Microsoft
Microsoft acquired GitHub in 2018 for $7.5 billion. For the first six years post-acquisition, GitHub maintained a high degree of autonomy, preserving its brand and product strategy. Under Dohmke’s leadership, GitHub rolled out several innovations, including enhancements to GitHub Actions and the launch of GitHub Copilot, which leverages AI to help developers write code faster.
However, the latest restructuring signals a shift in strategy, as Microsoft moves to integrate GitHub’s operations more deeply into its AI-focused business units.
