Inbizzy, Jakarta, — Meta has hired Ruoming Pang, the former head of foundational AI models at Apple, to lead its newly formed Artificial Superintelligence division. This strategic move is seen as part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s long-term ambition to make Meta a global leader in AI innovation.
The new superintelligence unit is designed to accelerate Meta’s efforts in developing advanced AI technologies capable of competing with systems from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic.
During his time at Apple, Pang led the team behind Apple Intelligence, working on foundational AI models and the integration of artificial intelligence with Siri and other Apple products. However, Apple’s overall progress in AI has been viewed as lagging behind its competitors in terms of innovation and model performance.
According to a Bloomberg report, Pang’s departure signals a possible internal lack of confidence in Apple’s current AI strategy. Apple is reportedly considering partnerships with third-party AI model developers to enhance Siri’s capabilities going forward.
Meanwhile, Meta continues to aggressively recruit top AI talent. In addition to Pang, the company has brought in leading scientists and engineers from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Safe Superintelligence. These hires are expected to strengthen Meta’s AI R&D efforts and support its long-term product ecosystem.
The recruitment of Pang further highlights the intensifying competition among major tech companies in building next-generation AI systems and securing leadership in the global AI race.
