Amazon Acquires Bee: Affordable AI Wearable Startup Pioneering Smart Audio Reminders

Inbizzy, — Amazon has officially announced the acquisition of Bee, a fast-rising AI-powered wearable startup. The news was first revealed by Bee co-founder Maria de Lourdes Zollo through a LinkedIn post. However, Amazon stated that the deal is not yet finalized.

Bee is known for its wearable device that records ambient conversations to automatically generate reminders and to-do lists. Its main products include a standalone smart bracelet priced at $49.99 and an Apple Watch app, both supported by a $19 monthly subscription. The device continuously listens to conversations unless the user manually mutes the recording feature.

On its official website, Bee states its vision is to provide “a personal ambient intelligence” that acts not just as a tool, but as a digital companion that helps users remember, reflect, and move more freely throughout their day.

Amazon’s Strategic Move into the AI Wearable Market

The acquisition highlights Amazon’s broader ambitions in the AI wearable segment. Known primarily for its smart home products like Echo and Alexa, Amazon appears to be pivoting toward more personalized, mobile AI solutions.

By integrating Bee’s technology, Amazon aims to diversify its portfolio beyond static smart home devices. In a statement to TechCrunch an Amazon spokesperson confirmed that Bee employees have been offered roles within Amazon.

This move also reflects Amazon’s determination to keep pace with competitors like Meta, which is integrating AI into smart glasses, as well as OpenAI and Apple, both of which are rumored to be developing their own AI hardware.

Privacy and Data Security Under the Spotlight

While Bee’s technology offers convenience and innovation, it has also raised concerns around privacy and data protection. Bee claims that users maintain full control over their data. Audio recordings are not stored or used for AI training, although behavioral data collected by the AI is stored to support assistant functionalities.

Bee also plans to roll out advanced features including topic- and location-based recording boundaries, and on-device AI processing — the latter being generally considered more privacy-friendly than cloud-based alternatives.

Still, questions remain about whether Bee’s current privacy policies will stay intact under Amazon’s ownership. The company has previously faced criticism for sharing footage from Ring security cameras with law enforcement without user consent or warrants. In 2023, Amazon’s Ring division settled an FTC complaint over broad internal access to customer videos.

Affordable Pricing Makes Bee Stand Out

One of Bee’s key advantages is its affordability. At just $50, the wearable is far more accessible than competing products like the Humane AI Pin, which retailed for $499 but failed to gain traction in the market.

Although the acquisition is still in the process of closing, industry analysts see the move as part of Amazon’s long-term strategy to strengthen its foothold in the age of generative AI and increasingly personalized smart devices.
