Inbizzy, BMW Group is expanding its digital sustainability offerings with the introduction of a groundbreaking feature in the My BMW App and MINI App. For the first time, drivers can now view their individual CO2 emissions across the entire lifecycle of their vehicle—from production to daily use—directly within the app.
This innovation marks a global first among automotive brands, offering a new level of environmental transparency via an accessible and user-friendly platform.
“Our usage research shows: The information in My Trips is one of the most popular features in the app,” says Dirk Wiedmann, Senior Vice President Sales Steering and Strategy, Digitalization.
“We are now expanding this successful function with carbon footprint calculation, giving our customers simple and straightforward access to sustainability-related information via a popular and widely used channel.”
Emissions Transparency: From Factory to Road
Designed with a technology-open approach, the personal carbon footprint feature supports internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, plug-in hybrids, and fully electric models (EVs). Initially, the feature will roll out in selected models across Germany, Austria, Belgium, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Switzerland, where vehicles have been TÜV Rheinland-certified for lifecycle carbon emissions.
Two Core Data Sets Behind the Carbon Footprint Calculation:
- Emissions from Vehicle Use
- The app’s My Trips function analyzes completed routes and calculates CO2 emissions based on energy or fuel consumption.
- For ICE vehicles, it uses fuel data to calculate CO2.
- For EVs, it calculates emissions using the average national energy mix, and also provides a comparison showing emissions levels when green energy is used.
- All figures are based on data from the International Energy Agency (IEA).
- Emissions from Vehicle Production
- Includes emissions from raw material processing, material procurement, transportation logistics, and vehicle manufacturing.
- The BMW Group publishes Vehicle Footprint Reports based on certified life cycle assessment standards, verified by TÜV Rheinland.
Helping Drivers Transition to Electric Mobility
The app also features the Electric Vehicle Analysis, launched in 2024, which allows ICE vehicle owners to simulate how a fully electric BMW would fit their personal driving profile.
After a user has completed at least 200 trips and 2,000 km, the tool:
- Shows which journeys could be made on a single EV charge using a selected BMW EV model
- Displays nearby charging station locations at frequently visited destinations
As of May 2025, over 100,000 users have accessed this feature.
Global Reach: Over 14 Million Active Users
The My BMW App and MINI App now have a global user base exceeding 14 million customers, with the My Trips feature available in over 90 countries and actively used by 1.9 million users.
