Depok City Aims for MURI Record with Cooking Oil Recycling Initiative at Car Free Day Event

Inbizzy, Depok, Indonesia — The Depok City Government is taking bold steps in environmental advocacy and community empowerment by launching the SERA MIJEL SAE program (short for Sembako Rakyat Minyak Jelantah Sampah Ekonomis, or People’s Basic Needs Through Used Cooking Oil and Economic Waste). This initiative is set to be recorded by the Indonesian World Records Museum (MURI) and was held at Depok City Hall Field on Sunday (July 6), coinciding with the Depok Car Free Day (DCFD).

The invitation to participate came directly from Depok Mayor Supian Suri during a community cultural event hosted by West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi in Jatimulya Village, Cilodong District, on Saturday (July 5).

Tomorrow, the Depok City Government will hold a MURI Record attempt for Used Cooking Oil during the Car Free Day at City Hall. We invite the public to participate,” said Supian, as quoted from the official Depok City Government website.

Celebrating National Family and Craft Days with Sustainability

This record-setting event is part of a broader celebration commemorating the 53rd National PKK Movement Day, the 32nd National Family Day, and the 45th Anniversary of the National Crafts Council (Dekranas). Organized by the Depok City Family Welfare Movement Team (TP-PKK) with full support from the municipal government, the program highlights sustainable practices and support for local entrepreneurs.

The event also marked the grand opening of the Depok Souvenir Store by Dekranasda, created to showcase and promote high-quality local products developed by local MSMEs under the guidance of Depok’s small business development programs.

Turning Waste Into Value: Used Oil for Clean Oil

At the heart of the SERA MIJEL SAE campaign is the exchange of used household cooking oil for clean cooking oil, a practical and educational initiative designed to reduce environmental pollution. Residents are encouraged to bring their used cooking oil and exchange a minimum of three liters for one liter of fresh cooking oil, with exchanges available in multiples.

According to Hikmah Yudawati, Chair of Working Group III TP PKK Depok: Just one liter of used cooking oil can contaminate up to one thousand liters of water if disposed of improperly.

To combat this, the collected used oil will be processed into bioavtur, an eco-friendly aviation fuel, offering a forward-looking solution in sustainable waste management and renewable energy production.

Oil exchanges can be made at the TP PKK Secretariat in Depok, Monday through Friday, from 08:00 AM to 03:00 PM (local time).
